Signs of Spring

I look forward to the first blooms of the daffodils each year.  To me, they signify Spring.  The golden yellow flower reminds me of a fiery sun rising up out of the dark.  New life is on its way.

What signifies Spring to you?  What signs tell you that Spring is about to make her grand entrance?

  1. Dogwoods blooming is the true Spring tell-tale sign for me. It also signifies that the turkeys have started gobbling and their spring ritual of breeding season has kicked in. For those that like to fish, it means the crappie are bitting.

Easter signifies Spring and renewal with dogwood blooming and the pinetree crosses. These are two of my favorite tales.

Legend of the Dogwood ~ Unknown

In Jesus time, the dogwood grew
To a stately size and a lovely hue.

‘Twas strong & firm it’s branches interwoven
For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen.

Seeing the distress at this use of their wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:

“Never again shall the dogwood grow
Large enough to be used so

Slender & twisted, it shall be

With blossoms like the cross for all to see.

As blood stains the petals marked in brown
The blossom’s center wears a thorny crown.

All who see it will remember me
Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree.

Cherished and protected this tree shall be

A reminder to all of my agony.”
